Pip and Pap Phonics Workshop Year 2:

Year 2 parents and pupils enjoyed reading Pip and Pap Purple Phase story "The Grand Duchess" in their family phonics workshop yesterday.

The book focuses on spellings from the advanced phonetic code.

For example, pupils read words such as:

The /sh/ sound spelt 'si', in words like 'mansion'

The /or/ sound spelt 'augh', in words like 'daughter'

Words with the /zh/ phoneme, in words like 'usual'

Pupils read the story to their parents with beautiful fluency and expression, before answering questions about the book, focusing on inference, retrieval, vocabulary and making links with other stories. The book discusses themes of loneliness. Pupils and parents talked about how to ensure everyone in our community feels valued and supported.

In the story, the Grand Duchess wears a beautiful necklace - so families made their own jewellery together using beads and buttons - don't they look regal?

We run Pip and Pap Parent and Pupil workshops every other week at Sinclair - please ask your child's class teacher for more details.
