Year 1 Pip and Pap Workshop

Year 1 parents and pupils very much enjoyed their Pip and Pap Phonics workshop together, reading the Pink Phase Book "The Surf Trip!"

Pupils taught their parents the grapheme-phoneme correspondences /ar/, /or/, /ur/ and 'er', explaining how both 'ur' and 'er' can make the same sound, and that also with these letter sound correspondences that we may hear a 'schwa' sound! Pupils talked about words they would find in the story with these grapheme-phoneme correspondences, such as 'tarmac', 'slurp', 'scorching', 'harmless' and 'hollers'.

In the story, Toab and Bemp go surfing at the beach, but they come across a bamboo shark! Luckily, it is very friendly! Pupils and parents created their own sharks together before talking about how to keep safe on the water. They discussed how to contact the coastguard and also the importance of a lifeguard on the beach.

This term's Pip and Pap Phonics Parent & Child Workshops will run every other week in Years R-2, please ask the office for more details.
