Refugee Week 2026 – Courage
As part of Refugee Week, our OWWL learning focused on the importance of shelter and the challenges faced when people are displaced from their homes.
The children explored the idea that all living things need shelter to stay safe, protected and secure. Working collaboratively in teams, they designed and built their own dens using different materials and then tested whether their structures could withstand different weather conditions. Through investigation, problem-solving and teamwork, the children adapted and improved their designs to make them stronger and more effective.
Alongside the practical activities, pupils discussed the meaning of displacement and considered what it might feel like to have to leave your home unexpectedly. They reflected on the importance of feeling safe, having somewhere to belong, and the courage shown by people who are forced to seek shelter elsewhere.
It was wonderful to see the children engage thoughtfully with these important themes while developing their creativity, resilience and teamwork skills outdoors. A fantastic example of learning that connects the natural world with empathy, understanding and global citizenship becoming Architects of a Better World
