Recycled Christmas Decorations
The Eco-team have been hard at work this half term. Not resting on our laurels after Gardening Day, we have decided that the only way is forward! This half term, in the spirit of Christmas, we have chosen to focus on how we decorate our tree.
In our meetings, we discussed that a lot of Christmas purchasing is often single use, resulting in it being thrown away once finished, only to be bought again next year. In the words of one of our team "buying it again when you can just recycle seems like a big waste of resources and money!" Too true! Not only did we not want to impact the school budget that could be spent on many useful things, but decorations can be easily damaged and never used again. Bins fill up every Boxing Day or January 1st with rubbish and unused pieces for Christmas.
Not at Sinclair Primary & Nursery School though! We are going to make a difference.
As a team, we created an assembly about recycled Christmas decorations and, not only that, we hosted a competition. The best recycled decorations would receive certificates and 'shout outs' in assembly for everyone to know that our children have been eco-warriors and are fighting for the planet!
So far, we have had many wonderful decorations including a snow globe using recycled plastic pieces, an angel from a reused plastic bottle, a Christmas tree made from cardboard and bubble wrap as well as many more.
There's still time to get stuck in and contribute to our tree. It won't have the newest pieces from the shop, but the decorations will be handmade with love and will be personal to us. The best part though is that we can use them again next year, giving these materials a new life and saving the rubbish sites from expanding this Christmas.
What can you make for our special Christmas tree?
