Year 2 Pip and Pap Workshop:
Year 2 parents and pupils enjoyed reading "The Hockey Final" today in their first parent and pupil phonics workshop of the year, recapping alternative pronunciations for graphemes we have already met, in the context of a story.
For example, they explored words such as:
'apron' - where the letter 'a' makes an /ai/ sound
'grass' - where the letter 'a' makes an /ar/ sound
'squad' - where the letter 'a' makes an /o/ sound
'demand' - where the letter 'e' makes an /ee/ sound
'final'- where the letter 'i' makes an /igh/ sound
'both' - where the letter 'o' makes an /oa/ sound
'awful' - where the letter 'u' makes a short /oo/ sound
'student' - where the letter 'u' makes a /y+oo/ sound
As part of the story, Pip and Pap oversleep, and very nearly miss their hockey match! Parents and pupils read the story together, answering verbal comprehension questions about what they had read. Then, they made their own alarm clocks using split pins - aren't they fabulous?
We run Pip and Pap parent workshops every other week at Sinclair, in years R -2. Please ask at the office for more details.
