Year 3 blog:

Our Golden Dog Poem

On 1st October, we celebrated National Poetry Day! Year 3 explored different types of poems and discussed the features that make each one unique. As a class, the children decided to write their own quatrain poem.

A quatrain is a short poem made up of exactly four lines. It can have different rhyme schemes and rhythms, depending on the poet’s style. For their poem, Year 3 decided to keep things simple, playful and funny, using an AA BB rhyme scheme – where the first two lines rhyme with each other and the final two lines rhyme with each other.

Inspired by the fun and playful Oi! Frog books, the children worked together to create a light-hearted and whimsical little story about a golden dog. They shared their ideas and combined them to create their very own class poem.

Once There Was a Golden Glistening Dog

Once there was a golden,
glistening dog.

He liked to sit
upon a log.

He would sit and think
all day long,

As the clock went off
with a BONG!

The children then brought their poem to life through their own creative illustrations, adding their own artistic ideas to the story.

It was wonderful to see everyone’s ideas come together to create a poem that is fun, imaginative and uniquely Year 3!
