Michael Rosen Day:

Last week, our school was buzzing with energy, laughter, and poetry as we celebrated Michael Rosen Day, a much-loved event dedicated to one of the nation’s favourite children’s authors and poets.

In the run-up to the big day, the children enjoyed a whole week of Michael Rosen–themed games during Enhanced Lunchtime Provision. From rhythm and rhyme challenges to silly-sentence competitions and poetry corner, the playground was full of creativity and giggles. It was wonderful to see pupils of all ages getting involved, sharing poems they loved, and even making up their own Rosen-inspired performances with friends.

To officially launch Thursday’s celebration, our Reading Ambassadors took centre stage in assembly. They spoke confidently about Michael Rosen’s life, his writing, and why he remains such an important figure in children’s literature. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and by the end of assembly the whole school was eager for the festivities to begin!

On Michael Rosen Day itself, classrooms were filled with poetry, storytelling, and the unmistakably joyful Rosen spirit. Many classes revisited their favourite pieces, including the ever-popular “Chocolate Cake”, which had children laughing, joining in with the iconic sound effects, and (if we’re honest) craving a slice of cake themselves! Others explored Rosen’s more thoughtful poems, discovering how he uses humour, emotion, and everyday experiences to connect with readers.

It was a day that celebrated imagination, expression, and the sheer joy of language. Most importantly, it reminded our pupils that poetry is for everyone, playful, powerful, and full of possibilities.
