Year 2 blog:
This week, Year 2 had a fantastic parent workshop, and it was wonderful to welcome so many of you into the classroom.
During the session, we read The Cruise from the Pip and Pap Purple Phase phase. After enjoying the story together, the children drew their own pictures of cruise ships and shared their thoughts about whether they would like to go on a cruise themselves, there were some brilliant ideas and discussions!
We are currently reading books that focus on Purple Phase sounds in phonics. This phase introduces more complex spelling patterns and alternative pronunciations, helping children to become more confident and flexible readers. Some of the sounds we explored included:
Alternative spellings for familiar sounds (e.g. ay, ai, a-e for the long “a” sound)
Different ways to read graphemes (e.g. ea in sea, bread, and steak)
Earth words that need to be recognised on sight
It was wonderful to see the children reading with such enthusiasm and to watch parents supporting them with sounding out, blending, and discussing the story.
Thank you to everyone who attended, we hope you found the workshop helpful and enjoyable. Your support at home makes a huge difference to your child’s reading journey!
