Year 5 blog:

On our DT Day this year, Year Four worked in teams to design Connecting with Literature-themed board games. The children had to explain the purpose of their games, create a set of instructions, include three moving mechanisms, and make them fun to play.

The children created both The Land of Roar and Charlotte’s Web-themed games, adding mechanisms such as sliders, trap doors and 3D doors for extra decoration. All the groups showed an understanding of how to do this, and many used the theme as an opportunity to adapt the moving mechanisms into dungeons, boats and dragons.

In addition, the children designed cards that directed the players’ next move and affected their luck, sometimes causing them to miss a turn or move backwards or forwards across the board, and occasionally even leading them to land in their dungeons.

The children had so much fun on the day and loved being able to play their games a week later, evaluating their success and discussing what they would do to make them even better. We look forward to getting these out during wet break times so that everyone can have a go at playing one another’s games.
