Year 5 blog:

This week, Year 5 became History Detectives as we stepped back in time and used our inference skills to investigate the past.

The children were presented with a historical image, but instead of being told what was happening, they had to look closely for clues and work it out for themselves. They carefully examined the people, clothing, objects, setting and expressions within the image, discussing what each detail might reveal about the time period and events taking place. 

Year 5 showed some amazing inference and analysis skills! The children were able to use evidence from the image to support their ideas, explaining not only what they thought was happening, but also why they thought it. We heard some fantastic discussions as pupils challenged each other’s ideas, built on previous answers and spotted small details that others had missed.

Just like real historians, the children understood that we cannot always know everything about the past straight away. Instead, historians gather evidence, ask questions and use clues to develop well-reasoned conclusions.

It was fantastic to see Year 5 approaching history with such curiosity, enthusiasm and careful thinking. We certainly have some brilliant young historians in the making
